About Emergency Services:

In Antigonish and Pictou Counties there are a variety of services that are designed to help keep you safe. This section provides information about what to do in an emergency situation along with details about the Police, Health, and Fire & Rescue Services, provided in the area.

*In case of a serious emergency call 911. When you dial 911, you are put in contact with a dispatcher. They will decide what is needed for your situation from your answers to a series of questions.

Police:

Antigonish and Pictou Counties are policed by both a Municipal and contracted service. The Municipal police service is the New Glasgow Regional Police, which covers the town of New Glasgow and the immediate surrounding area within Pictou County. The contracted police service is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which covers more rural areas. There are detachments of the RCMP located in the towns of Antigonish, Pictou and Stellarton. Fire & Rescue:

Fire Departments are located in multiple communities throughout Antigonish and Pictou Counties in order to provide fast assistance when needed. Departments are:

Health Services:

If someone's health is in danger call 911. Emergency Health Services will provide response with paramedics and ambulances.

What you can do to stay safe: If you are interested in learning more about what you can do to help keep you and others safe consider visiting the following websites for more information:

  • 211 Nova Scotia provides information about what to do for a variety of disaster situations.
  • Prepare a kit has a video and instructions to help you create kits for both your home and car.
  • Animals in case of an emergency: Once you have prepared yourself for an emergency you may worry about your animals. This is a small pamphlet that provides information on how to prepare for your animals in case of emergency created by the Disaster Animal Response Team of Nova Scotia. It covers: cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, horses, livestock and small animals.

Crime Prevention:

Nova Scotia Crime Prevention works to address the root cause of crime.

Cancellations:

At different times, organizations will cancel their services - this is normally due to a storm and can happen on a regular basis during the winter.
