The Antigonish Highland Society Cairn is located in the Field of
Cairns, which is situated within the town of Antigonish. It was erected
in the memory of the Highland Pioneers who left the Isles and Highlands
of Auld Scotland. It was the fourth cairn to be erected since the
Field of Cairns began in 1979.
Inscription:
“In memory of the Highland Pioneers who left
the Isles and Highlands of
Auld Scotland to settle in this part of New Scotland nearly two centuries
ago and who prevailed over hardships and scarcities to convert the
first primeval into the fair land that it is today.
They instituted the Antigonish Highland Society ( Clanna Nan Gaidheal)
on August 22, 1861-the first object of said society being to preserve
the
martial spirit, language, dress, music, games, and antiquities of
the Caledonians. The Antigonish Highland Society is greatful to the
sisters of St. Martha’s who donated the celtic cross which
one grace the portal of the original
St. Martha’s Hospital constructed in 1925 and which is a significant
part
of our heritage”
The cairn which honours those that have contributed to the 4-H
program stands directly in front of the Reverend H.J. MacDonald School
which is situated in Heatherton. It was unveiled by The Honourable
William Gillis who at the time was The Minister of Agriculture and
Marketing. The plaque was unveiled on the 29th day of July 1972.
Inscription:
“This plaque marks the founding of the Antigonish Ayrshire
heifer club. The first junior club in Nova Scotia in 1922,
and commemorates the leadership of the many dedicated
people who have had a share in the development of the 4-H
movement, and the extension of its principles over the
past half century.
