ACADIAN TATAMAGOUCHE

38

"I would have you give orders to the Detachment you send to Tatamagouche, to demolish all the Houses &c. they find there, together with all the Shallops, Boats, Canoes or Vessels of any kind which may be lying ready for carrying off the inhabitants & their Cattle, & by this means the pernicious intercourse and intelligence between St. John’s Island & Louisbourg and the inhabitants of the interior part of the Country will in a great measure be prevented."*

From other parts of the letter it is evident there had been previous instructions that Captain Lewis with a detachment was to march to the Cobequid villages for the purpose of marking a proper road and Lawrence went on to order that, while the plan for the road was for the time being abandoned, Lewis was to "mark such a Path as will enable us without any difficulty to find the way till a proper road can be cut."

*A part of Lawrence’s letter of instructions to Monckton is printed in N.S. archives Vol I p 267 from which this quotation has been taken.
