The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library has seven library branches where children’s books and materials may be borrowed for free by library card holders.
Getting a Library Card
Getting a library card is very simple, and the best part is that it is FREE. With a library card children may access all of the library’s books, movies, magazines, tapes and information available on our website. Library cards are available at all library branches. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or have a signed registration form in order to obtain a card.
Check out the Children's Services brochure to see all the great free services we offer for Kids.
This website features links to World Book Online, Homework Help, children’s book reviews, and basic library information, including a guideline to properly locating books within the library catalogue.
The children’s website also features information on special programs, such as the WOW Reading Challenge and the Summer Reading Club.
Library Outreach to Children in Rural Areas
Books by Mail is a free mail-order library for rural residents of Pictou and Antigonish Counties. Families may select materials, such as books, magazines, audio books, DVDs, and videos from the online catalogue. This service is ideal for families unable to regularly commute to library branches and children who are home schooled. This is a free service, as all postage is paid by the Library.

Children's & Youth Programs at the Library Branches
All Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library branches offer children's and youth programs, while the selection of programs varies by library branch (largely due to space).
All programs are offered free of charge, and registration is required for all programs due to the limited seating space (with the exception of the Family Movies at Pictou, Antigonish & New Glasgow libraries, and LEGOs at the Antigonish Library - these are all 'drop-in as you wish' programs).
The following list of library programs usually start in September, with a pause over Christmas holidays, and finish in May/June. In the summer months, some drop-in programs may be offered as well as Summer Reading Clubs, and Family Movies.
For more information, and to register - please contact your local library branch for details.

The WOW Reading Challenge
The Reading Challenge is part of a larger crime prevention program called the Adopt-a-Library Literacy Program. It is a partnership of police and public libraries and advocates literacy thereby ensuring children and youth have high self esteem and feel in control of their lives. By taking part in the Reading Challenge children can improve their reading skills and learn to work together towards a common goal by competing against other schools in a friendly and positive way. They are also rewarded for their reading efforts by library staff and police who visit the participating schools to “catch” them reading. Visit the Adopt-a-Library Literacy Program website.
